For the first time ever, The Spouter Inn has its own Chickens! We ordered and received 16 Buff Orpington's and 1 Black Cochin. This particular breed of Chicken is extremely friendly, similar to that of a house dog and they are great layers which means we will have our very own, fresh eggs by mid to late September! All of our Chickens are fed fresh, unused fruits and vegetables from our organic gardens and leftovers from breakfast; other food includes non-hormonic grains to help keep up their protein intake. Additionally, we use rotational grazing in our backyard where they keep our lawn trimmed and bug population under control. Thus, all of our eggs are extremely fresh, lower in cholesterol and higher in vitamins!
Since we are very busy throughout the year, our chickens would be hard-pressed to supply us with all the eggs we need. In an effort to support our local farmers and economy, we buy extra eggs from Bowden's Egg Farm which are delivered fresh each week.
